About Tower Hamlets’ figures

Tower Hamlets sets one of England's lowest Band D charges. At £1,837.78 for 2026/27, its Band D is 6th from the bottom of the 296-council table and 23.8% under the simple average of English councils. Inside London, just 4 boroughs ask for less.

A low borough charge changes the shape of the bill. The Greater London Authority adds the same £510.51 in every London borough, an amount that also covers London's police force, the Met, and its fire brigade. Where the borough's own element is modest, as here at £1,327.27, the GLA's slice grows: it reaches 27.8% of Band D in Tower Hamlets, the 5th highest proportion among the 32 boroughs.

Housing in the borough is weighted towards the middle bands rather than the bottom. Band C is the most frequent, with 40,920 properties (27.0%), and Band D next at 21.5%. Band A holds only 4,490 homes, or 3.0% of the 151,640 listed. Bands E to H make up 32.0%, and a Band E bill this year comes to £2,246.18.

Compared with 2025/26, when the Band D charge stood at £1,754.57, Tower Hamlets has added £83.21, an increase of 4.7%. Its return puts the base at 111,852 Band D equivalents, the 8th largest among the boroughs, with 95% expected to be collected.
