Band by Band

Council tax for 2026/27 England, Scotland and Wales

About the data

Every council tax amount on Band by Band is copied from an official table, without change: the yearly charge for each band in each council, for 2026/27 and, for Band D, 2025/26. Monthly figures, rises, averages and rankings are worked out by us from those amounts. Each page lists its sources at the bottom, with the date we read them.

England

The amounts for each band come from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government's statistics “Council Tax levels set by local authorities in England”, for 296 councils. These are averages for the whole council area, parish charges included: your own bill may be higher or lower depending on your parish. Band D for 2025/26 comes from the same statistics for that year.

Where a council page breaks Band D down between the bodies that receive it (the council, parishes, the county or the Greater London Authority, police, fire and combined authorities), the figures come from the same 2026/27 statistics.

Scotland

The amounts come from the Scottish Government's council tax datasets, for 32 councils. Water and sewerage charges are not included in these amounts. Homes are chargeable dwellings as the Scottish Government counts them, not the Valuation Office Agency count of properties used in England and Wales.

Wales

The amounts come from the Welsh Government's StatsWales tables of council tax levels by billing authority and band, for 22 councils. Wales has an extra band, I, above band H. These amounts include an average of community council charges across the whole council area: your own bill may be higher or lower depending on your community. Where a Welsh council page breaks Band D down, the figures come from StatsWales as well.

Homes in each band

For England and Wales, the number of homes in each band comes from the Valuation Office Agency's statistics “Council Tax: stock of properties” (all properties on the list at 31 March 2026, Valuation Office Agency). For a few councils and bands the agency does not publish a figure; those are left out of any total we work out. Scottish figures are chargeable dwellings counted by the Scottish Government, a different definition.

The rules and the bands

The value ranges of the bands and the proportions between them come from section 5 of the Local Government Finance Act 1992, read on legislation.gov.uk. The guides on challenging a band and discounts and exemptions summarise GOV.UK guidance in our own words; each says when the guidance it uses was last updated. Where our sources do not cover Scotland or Wales, the page says so and points to mygov.scot or gov.wales.

How we work out the figures

  • Monthly cost: the yearly amount divided by 10 or 12, rounded to the nearest penny.
  • Rises: Band D in 2026/27 compared with Band D in 2025/26, for the same council.
  • Averages: simple averages of the councils of a nation, each council counting once, whatever its size.
  • Rankings: by Band D within each nation. The nations are not ranked together, because their figures are not counted in the same way.

When the figures change

The figures are for 2026/27. We read the new tables for the following year when they are published and update the site; each page shows when it was last updated.
