About Somerset’s figures

Somerset's Band D carries one of the heaviest parish elements in England. Somerset's 328 parishes are a number surpassed by just one council, and their precepts, averaged across Somerset's Band D homes, come to £191.82, which is 7.5% of Somerset's £2,560.59. Only three councils record a higher average parish charge, and in Somerset that parish average outweighs the fire authority's whole share of £109.68.

The band figures on this page are therefore averages in the full sense: the bill for a particular home may land somewhat above or below them, depending on its parish.

Somerset is also one of England's largest council areas. Its 273,500 homes are exceeded in number by only four councils, and its tax base of 217,767.42 Band D equivalents ranks sixth.

Leaving the parishes aside, Somerset's council keeps £1,950.89, a little over three quarters, £37.15 of it the adult social care precept added in 2026/27, and policing takes £308.20.

Band B is the commonest band, with 72,560 homes or 26.5%. Band A has 43,460 (15.9%) and Band C 22.0%. Band D's share is 14.8% and the four dearer bands account for about a fifth, among them 520 Somerset homes in Band H, billed £5,121.18. A year earlier, Somerset's Band D was £121.97 lower; the rise is 5.00%.

The parish average also equals about 62% of the police precept. Between Band A, at £1,707.06, and Band H, the yearly difference in Somerset is £3,414.12. Policing and fire together take £417.88, some 16.3% of the Band D total.
