About Shropshire’s figures
No English council lifted Band D by a larger percentage for 2026/27 than Shropshire. Its charge climbed from £2,318.80 to £2,528.18, which is £209.38 more, a 9.03% rise and close to double the simple English average of 4.78%. Split across the usual ten instalments, the extra amounts to about £20.94 monthly.
Parish councils are a large presence in Shropshire. Table 10 counts 190 parishes there, a total only six councils exceed, and spread over every Band D home their precepts average £128.15, roughly a twentieth of the bill. That parish average even edges past Shropshire's fire precept of £124.44, so taken together the parishes ask more of a Band D home than the fire authority does. A given address may therefore pay a little more or less than the averages shown, according to its parish.
The fire precept itself ranks third in England; only two councils go higher. Telford and Wrekin matches it to the penny, along with the same £306.50 for policing, yet ends with a Band D of £2,256.26. Shropshire's own council keeps £1,969.09, nearly 78%, with £36.13 of that being this year's adult social care precept.
Across Shropshire's 153,430 homes, Band B is the largest group with 39,140, about a quarter, ahead of Band C (20.9%) and Band A (18.0%). Band D covers 22,200. The four dearest bands take in just over a fifth (21.1%), and Band H, at £5,056.36, holds 360.
Band D is the band the national tables use to compare councils. In Shropshire it is £2,528.18 a year. Across the 296 councils in England the simple average of Band D is £2,410.97, and 220 of them charge less than Shropshire.
The dearest Band D in England is Dorset at £2,765.02; the cheapest is Wandsworth at £1,028.21.
