About Peterborough’s figures

Fifty English councils charge less than Peterborough at Band D. Its £2,293.47 for 2026/27 leaves it £117.50 short of the 296-council simple average. The rise from the previous year, £107.75 or 4.93%, ran close to the 4.78% average increase.

Five contributors appear in Peterborough's row of Table 10. The council keeps £1,836.72, 80.1%, of which £34.99 is the 2026/27 increment of adult social care precept. Its police precept of £314.37 tops that of 200 of the 263 councils with a police line; the fire authority adds £92.16 and the combined authority's line is £36.00. Bodies other than the council and its parishes thus account for £442.53 together, almost a fifth of Band D at 19.3%.

Peterborough has twenty-nine parishes, whose precepts average £14.22. Since the band amounts are area-wide averages, a household in one parish can pay slightly more or less than one in another.

Peterborough's homes crowd into the lowest bands. Band A alone takes in 36,030 of Peterborough's 92,630 properties, close to two in five, at a charge of £1,528.98; Band B has 23,050, or 24.9%. Band C takes 17.2% and Band D 10.1%. Beyond Band D the numbers shrink to 8.9% for the upper four bands combined, with 80 homes reaching Band H.

Of the £442.53 that goes outside the council, policing alone represents £314.37, about seven pounds in every ten. The combined authority's £36.00 is the smallest of the outside charges. At the top, those 80 Band H homes are billed £4,586.94.
