About Leeds’ figures

Leeds is among the largest council tax areas in England. Its tax base for 2026/27 stands at 249,430.51 Band D equivalents, exceeded only by Birmingham and North Yorkshire, and there are 380,760 properties on the valuation list.

The average Band D charge is £2,283.73. That is £111.34, or 5.1%, more than in 2025/26 and places Leeds 250th of the 296 English areas, £127.24 below their simple average. Most households pay less than the Band D figure anyway: 144,040 properties (38%) are in Band A, at an average of £1,522.49, and another 81,090 in Band B, at £1,776.23. Band C, with 74,410 properties, averages £2,029.98. Only 760 properties are in Band H. Between Band A and Band D the difference is £761.24 a year.

The Band D total is made up of £1,903.74 for Leeds City Council, £278.28 for the police, £89.49 for fire and £12.22 for parish councils. The parish sum is spread across the whole city in the statistics, though Leeds has 33 parishes and the precept a household pays depends on which parish it is in. Of all the parts, the city council's is by far the largest, at 83.4%.

Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield carry the same police and fire figures, and of those five areas Leeds has the lowest Band D, so differences between those places and Leeds arise from the council and parish parts. Collection is assumed at 98.5% across the city.
