About Kirklees’ figures

By number of homes Kirklees ranks among England's bigger council areas: 193,930 properties, a total only 13 English councils exceed. Measured instead in Band D equivalents, Kirklees's tax base of 129,790.04 is beaten by only 23 councils.

Those homes are heavily concentrated in the cheapest bands. Band A alone holds 86,030 homes, 44.4%, with Band B on 18.2% and Band C on 17.3%, so bands A and B together account for more than three Kirklees homes in five (62.6%). Band D, the band used to express the average bill, holds just 9.3%, and at the very top 170 Kirklees homes are in Band H, at £4,882.14 a year.

Kirklees has set Band D at £2,441.07, having added £119.31 since 2025/26. That 5.14% rise runs slightly ahead of the 4.78% that English councils averaged. Of that figure the council claims £2,062.42, of which £39.29 is this year's addition of adult social care precept; policing takes £278.28, fire £89.49, and five parishes £10.88 on average. Expressed as shares, the council's portion is 84.5% and policing plus fire together 15.1%.

Bradford, Calderdale, Leeds and Wakefield are charged the very same police and fire sums as Kirklees. Out of those five, Kirklees has the highest Band D, though only narrowly ahead of Calderdale at £2,420.15.

Kirklees's Band A charge, £1,627.38, is therefore the amount for the largest single group of homes, and Band B costs £1,898.61. The five parishes add only £10.88 on average, under 0.5% of Band D.
