About Barnet’s figures

No London borough has a bigger tax base than Barnet. Converted into Band D equivalents, its housing comes to 159,296, which also makes it the 10th largest base in England. Behind that figure stand 162,960 homes on the valuation list, and a good number of them sit in the upper bands.

Bands G and H, the two dearest, contain 21,180 Barnet properties between them, 13.0% of the total. Band E, with 21.1%, even outnumbers Band C, with 20.4%, while Band D remains the single most common band at 24.9%. Owners in Band G are billed £3,554.33 for 2026/27 and those in Band H £4,265.20. At the opposite end only 3,450 homes sit in Band A, where the charge is £1,421.73.

The borough's Band D, £2,132.60, falls near the middle of the London range: 20th of the 32 boroughs, a fraction (0.9%) above their simple average of £2,113.85. Nationally it is 281st of 296. Twelve months earlier Band D stood at £2,035.52, so the step up is £97.08, or 4.8%.

Barnet itself sets £1,622.09 of the Band D figure (76.1%). The Greater London Authority claims £510.51 (23.9%), the same sum it takes from every borough; the Metropolitan Police and the fire brigade form part of that line rather than appearing separately. With no parishes in the borough, there is nothing else to add. The council's return builds in a collection rate of 97%.
