About Barking and Dagenham’s figures
Barking and Dagenham tops England for one measure: the proportion of homes valued in Band C. Of 82,500 properties, 50,750 are in that one band, 61.5%, more than every other band combined. Next, at a distance, come Band B with 15.3% and Band D with 13.2%. The four upper bands from E to H barely register at 2.7%: a mere 50 Band G homes and ten in Band H.
For most households here, then, the relevant figure is the Band C charge of £1,954.23 for 2026/27, not the Band D reference of £2,198.51. That Band D figure is up £100.37 on a year earlier, or 4.78%, and only 26 English councils go lower.
Of that figure, £1,688.00 stays with Barking and Dagenham's council. The remaining £510.51, almost a quarter at 23.2%, is the GLA's, and in London that precept bundles in Metropolitan Police and fire service costs, so neither appears separately. Parishes are absent.
Lined up by Band D among the 32 councils sharing the identical GLA charge, Barking and Dagenham lands 15th from the dearest, near the middle of the pack. Tucked inside that £1,688.00 is £32.16 of adult social care precept, the part added this year.
Put another way, Band C homes outnumber Band D homes by close to five to one, and only 2,250 properties in the whole area sit above Band D. Between a Band C and a Band D bill in Barking and Dagenham, the yearly difference is £244.28.
